Your app keeps its screens and database. A small service is added on your backend that sends the right data to the AI model and returns the result to the app: an answer, extracted fields from a document, a summary. The app gains one new screen or button, not a new architecture.

Yes. Your backend calls the model through an API and returns the answer to the app, so the rest of the app does not change. The model can be limited to answering from your own documents.
Usually not. AI features connect through an API from your backend. A rebuild is only worth considering if the app's code is unavailable or in poor shape.
You pay the AI provider for usage, which depends on the number of requests and the amount of text, audio or images processed. A developer should estimate this from your expected usage before you commit.
