Five things set the price. Most quotes that look very different are really scoping these five things differently.
AI adds two kinds of cost. The first is one-time build work: connecting the app to an AI model, preparing your data (documents, FAQs, product catalogue), writing the prompts and guard rails, and testing the answers on real examples. That is scoped like any other feature.
The second is ongoing and is often left out of quotes: usage fees paid to the AI provider (for example OpenAI, Google or Anthropic) for every request the app makes. They are usually small for a low-traffic app and grow with the number of users and the length of each conversation or document. They are paid by you to the provider, not to the developer, and a good developer will estimate them for you before you commit.
Quotes for what sounds like the same app can differ by several times. Usually the cheapest quotes are for a resold template or a website wrapped in an app shell, and the most expensive include a large team and a long discovery phase. Neither is wrong in itself. Compare what each quote includes: the number of screens, the backend, who owns the code and store accounts, whether maintenance is included, and whether the price is fixed or hourly.
