Prompt

A prompt is the input given to a language model — the instructions, context and data it uses to produce output. In production, prompts are versioned assets that get tested and changed carefully, not text typed into a box.

Prompt quality has a real effect, but it's routinely oversold. Beyond a competent baseline — clear instructions, relevant context, examples of the desired output, an explicit format — additional wordsmithing produces small gains. The large gains come from feeding the model better information.

The engineering discipline that matters: keep prompts in version control, change one thing at a time, and measure against a fixed set of test cases. A prompt tweaked live on production traffic with no evaluation set is a change nobody can prove helped.

Why it matters

"Prompt engineering" is often quoted as if it were the bulk of an AI project. It isn't. Data access, integration and error handling are.
