Human in the Loop

Human in the loop means an automated process pauses for a person to approve, correct or reject before it continues — typically before anything irreversible, like sending a message, issuing a refund or deleting a record.

The design question is where to put the checkpoint, and the answer follows from reversibility rather than from how much you trust the model. Drafting an email needs no approval; sending it to four thousand customers does. Flagging an invoice as suspicious needs none; paying it does.

Checkpoints in the wrong place kill the automation. If a person must approve every step, you've built a slower manual process with extra software. The aim is a system that runs unattended and stops only at the few points where being wrong is expensive.

Why it matters

It's the difference between automation you can leave running and automation nobody trusts. It also makes AI viable in regulated work, where an audit trail of who approved what is the requirement.
