How to rank in the Google local pack
For any search with local intent — 'dentist near me', 'CA firm in Madhapur', 'plumber in Dallas' — the three map results above the organic listings take the majority of the clicks. Ranking there is a different job from ranking organically, with different inputs.
Google weighs three things: relevance, distance and prominence. You cannot change distance. The other two are the work.
Get the profile genuinely complete
Not 'filled in' — complete. Profiles with every field populated consistently outperform sparse ones, and most businesses stop at about 60%.
- Primary category — the single highest-impact field on the profile. Be specific: 'Orthodontist' rather than 'Dentist' if that is what you are. Add secondary categories for genuine additional services.
- Services and products, each with a description. Most profiles leave this empty entirely.
- Hours, including special hours for holidays. Wrong hours generate one-star reviews from people who turned up to a closed shop.
- Photos, added regularly rather than once. Exterior, interior, team, work. Profiles with recent photos get more engagement.
- The full business description, using the words customers actually search for.
- Attributes — wheelchair access, parking, payment methods, languages spoken.
Reviews: velocity beats total
A steady flow of recent reviews outperforms a large number collected two years ago. Google weighs recency, and so do customers — a five-star average whose newest review is from 2023 reads as a business that has stopped.
Ask every satisfied customer, with a direct link to the review form so it takes one tap. Reply to every review, including the negative ones — that reply is read by future customers far more than by the reviewer. And never buy reviews; detection is good and removal takes the legitimate ones with it.
NAP consistency and citations
Name, Address, Phone. These must match exactly everywhere they appear — your website, Justdial, IndiaMART, Sulekha, Yelp, Apple Maps, industry directories, your Facebook page.
'Exactly' is literal. 'Shop 4, MG Road' and 'Shop No. 4, M.G. Road' are different strings, and inconsistency across enough sources weakens the confidence signal. Pick one canonical format and apply it everywhere.
What the website contributes
The profile does not work alone. Your site needs a page that genuinely matches the search — a page about that service, mentioning that area, with real content about serving it.
Also required: LocalBusiness schema with matching NAP, an embedded map, and your address in the footer. If you serve multiple areas, a real page per area — with genuinely different content on each, because near-identical location pages are scaled content abuse and put the whole domain at risk.
Posts on Google Business Profile are underused and cheap. They appear on your profile and signal activity. A weekly post about a service, an offer or a completed job takes minutes and most competitors are not doing it.
Common questions
How long does it take to rank in the local pack?
For an established profile with a complete listing and steady reviews, meaningful movement often shows within 30 to 60 days. New profiles take longer — Google is cautious about new local entities. Competitive urban categories take longer than niche ones.
Does my business address affect local rankings?
Yes, significantly. Proximity to the searcher is one of the three main factors and you cannot change it. A business in the city centre appears for more searches than one on the outskirts. This is why service-area businesses should define their service area carefully and build genuine content for the areas they want.
How many reviews do I need?
There is no threshold. Recency and consistency matter more than total — twenty reviews spread over the last year generally outperform a hundred from three years ago. Aim for a steady flow rather than a burst, which also looks more natural.
Do I need separate pages for each area I serve?
If you genuinely serve them and can write genuinely different content for each, yes — they rank for 'service in area' queries. If the pages would differ only by a swapped place name, do not build them. That is scaled content abuse and it endangers your whole site, not just those pages.
