The short answer

How Much Does It Cost to Build an AI Agent?

A custom AI agent typically costs $8,000–$40,000 from a US development agency and $40,000–$200,000+ from an enterprise consultancy. A single-purpose agent is at the low end; multi-agent systems with shared memory and tool access sit at the top. The biggest cost drivers are how many systems the agent needs to act on, how much accuracy matters, and whether a mistake is reversible. Our prices are $899 for a single agent, $2,499 for a multi-agent system and $5,999 for a full agent platform.

What the US market charges

Who you hire changes the number more than what you buy

The same brief costs wildly different amounts depending on who builds it. Here's the honest spread.

Who you hireTypical costWhat that actually means
Freelance prompt engineer$1,000 – $6,000Often a wrapper around a model with light tooling. Fine for a prototype, thin on guardrails and evaluation.
US AI development agency$8,000 – $40,000Proper tool integration, guardrails and testing. The realistic range for a production single agent.
Enterprise consultancy$40,000 – $200,000+Multi-agent systems with compliance, security review and change management wrapped around them.
In-house AI engineer$130,000 – $220,000 / yearUS salary for someone who can build this well. Scarce and expensive to retain in 2026.
Mana Studio$899 – $5,999+Guardrails and an accuracy test set included as standard.

Best for A whole function handled, with a person supervising rather than doing.

Costs nobody quotes upfront

The lines that show up later

None of these are dishonest on their own. They're just rarely in the number you were shown first.

Model usage per month

The main ongoing cost. Agents make several model calls per task, so they cost more to run than a chatbot — typically $30–$300 a month for a single agent at SMB volume, more if it reasons over long documents.

Evaluation and re-testing

Model providers update their models, and behaviour shifts. An agent that was accurate in March can drift by September. Ask whether you get a test set you can rerun yourself — without one you have no way to notice.

The long tail of edge cases

Getting to 80% accuracy is fast. Getting from 90% to 97% is often more work than everything before it. Be clear with any vendor about which number the quote is for.

Human review time

Approval gates are a feature, not a flaw — but someone has to click them. Factor a few minutes per task into your savings calculation rather than assuming the work drops to zero.

Prompt and context maintenance

When your pricing, policies or processes change, the agent's instructions need updating too. Small and cheap, but real — and it needs an owner, or it silently goes stale.

FAQ

AI Agent Cost — your questions answered

Why do AI agents cost more than chatbots?+
Because an agent takes actions and a chatbot answers questions. Actions need tool integration, permissions, guardrails, approval flows, logging and far more testing — the risk of being wrong is materially higher when the system can send an email or update a record. That's why our chatbots start at $299 and agents at $899.
What does an AI agent cost to run each month?+
Model usage is the main cost and it scales with how many tasks the agent handles and how much it has to read. Most single-agent SMB deployments run $30–$300 a month. We route each step to the cheapest model that does it well rather than sending everything to the largest one, which usually cuts this substantially.
Can I use an off-the-shelf agent platform instead?+
Sometimes, and we'll say so if it fits. Off-the-shelf agents are good when your use case matches what they were built for. They struggle when the agent needs to act inside your own systems, follow your specific business rules, or meet a compliance requirement. The honest test is whether you can configure it in an afternoon — if you're fighting the tool, custom is cheaper in the end.
How do I know it works before it goes live?+
We build a test set from your real historical examples and measure the agent against it, so you see actual accuracy on your actual data before launch rather than a demo on cherry-picked inputs. You keep that test set and can rerun it any time.
What stops it doing something expensive or wrong?+
Scope, so the agent only has access to the tools its job needs. Approval gates, so anything irreversible waits for a human. Confidence thresholds, so it escalates rather than guessing. And full logging, so you can audit exactly what it did and why.
Which is cheaper — one agent or several?+
One agent doing one job well is always cheaper and usually more reliable. Multi-agent systems earn their cost when the work genuinely has distinct stages that need different tools and instructions. If a vendor proposes five agents for something one could do, ask why.
