The short answer

The short version

The cost difference is real and it comes from salaries and overhead, not from cutting corners — a senior engineer in Hyderabad and one in Austin write the same code for very different money. What you should scrutinise is not the price but the specifics: who exactly is working on it, what happens when it goes wrong, and whether you own the result. Pay US rates when you genuinely need people in the room, deep US domain knowledge, or a vendor your procurement process requires.

Side by side

Where each one actually wins

A comparison where one column wins every row isn't a comparison. These are the trade-offs as we'd describe them on a call.

When a US agency is the right call

There are real cases where we're the wrong choice, and you'd rather hear them now than four weeks in:

  • You need people physically present — on-site workshops, in-person stakeholder sessions, filming at your location.
  • The work depends on deep US regulatory or domain knowledge that has to be lived, not researched — some healthcare, insurance and government contexts.
  • Your procurement or compliance rules require a US-domiciled vendor, US-only data handling, or a US legal jurisdiction for the contract.
  • You need a large team surged onto something in days and want a single US throat to choke contractually.
  • The internal politics of the project need an expensive, recognisable brand on the invoice. That's a real reason, and no amount of quality from us solves it.

If you're in one of those, hire the US agency — it's the correct decision and we'd tell you so on the first call rather than take the project and disappoint you.

Over three years

The comparison most people don't run

Month one is the wrong window. Here's what the two options cost once they've been running a while.

 US agencyOffshore team
Initial website build$8,000 – $20,000$499
SEO, 36 months$54,000 – $126,000$299/mo
Changes and support$5,000 – $15,000Included in retainer
Three-year total$67,000 – $161,000Around $11,000

A representative small-business scenario: a business website, then ongoing SEO and periodic changes over three years.

Practical steps

How to de-risk an offshore engagement

The failures are real and they're nearly always the same five things. Every one is checkable before you commit money:

  1. 1

Start small. A single landing page or one video tells you more about a vendor than any sales call.

  2. 2

Insist on a fixed scope in writing — page count, features, revisions, timeline, and what is explicitly excluded.

  3. 3

Get the NDA and IP assignment signed before you share anything substantive.

  4. 4

Require a live preview link from week one, not status reports. You should be able to open the work whenever you like.

  5. 5

Tie payments to milestones you approve. Never pay 100% upfront, to anyone, anywhere.

FAQ

Offshore vs US Agency — your questions answered

Why is offshore development so much cheaper?+
Salaries and overhead. A senior engineer's total cost in the US is several times what it is in India, and a US agency also carries office space, sales staff and management layers that appear in your hourly rate. The output is the same code. Where offshore genuinely goes wrong is in communication and accountability, which is a management problem rather than a skill problem — and it's what you should be interrogating on the call.
How do the time zones actually work?+
India is 9.5 to 12.5 hours ahead of the US depending on your coast, so our afternoon is your morning. In practice that means a daily overlap window for calls, and work happening overnight your time — you review progress at the start of your day. Most clients find the overnight cycle a benefit once they're used to it. Calls happen at 9am your time, not ours.
What about quality? Isn't offshore work notoriously bad?+
The reputation comes from the bottom of the market — $5-an-hour bidding sites where nobody is accountable and the work is subcontracted three times over. That's a real phenomenon and it's not what we are. The honest way to check any vendor, us included, is to look at live work you can open in a browser, and to start with something small enough that being wrong costs you very little.
Who owns the code and the IP?+
You do, completely — code, designs, hosting, domains and every login handed over at the end, with IP assignment in the contract. Ask this question of every vendor you talk to. A meaningful number of agencies, US ones included, retain ownership and licence the work back to you, and you find out when you try to leave.
What if something goes wrong — what's my recourse?+
This is the fair concern and we won't wave it away. Cross-border enforcement is genuinely harder than suing someone in your own state. The practical mitigation is structural rather than legal: milestone payments so your exposure at any moment is small, a live preview link so problems are visible in week one rather than month three, and starting with a small project. If you're contracting for six figures, use an escrow arrangement — we're happy to.
Do you subcontract the work?+
No. Our team in Warangal and Hyderabad does the work, and you talk to the people building it rather than an account manager relaying messages. Worth asking your US agency the same question — subcontracting onward, sometimes offshore, at a markup, is common and rarely disclosed.
